NOM O’CLOCK: TEXAS WEEKEND

Hello everyone! We are back with a Nom O’Clock post. I was a part time student for the past 2 semesters of my senior year. Being a part time student means that you most likely have a long weekend every week. One weekend in April, four of my friends and I went to Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. I have always wanted to go Texas but never had the chance to until then. What can I say other than the food there was a dream. I do not remember not liking anything we ate. Let’s get started!

Emporium Pie – Dallas

Emporium Pie is such a quaint cafe. The minute I walked in I gasped at how cute their wallpapers and china were. We had “Dr.Love”, a red velvet pie, “Lord of the Pies”, a deep dish apple pie, and “Smooth Operator,” a chocolate pie. My favorite is their chocolate pie. The chocolate ganache filling was extremely smooth I know why they named it the “Smooth Operator”. 10/10 would come back here when I am in town.

Gordough Public House – Austin

One thing about me that not a lot of people know is that my second favorite food after ramen is fried chicken and waffles. The sweetness of the maple syrup and the savoriness of the fried chicken make a great marriage. However, at Gordough Public House, my fried chicken obsession was taken to another level. Out of the five donuts we had, my favorite was, of course, their fried chicken and donut. I prefer savory foods over sweets, but if you love sweets, donut worry, Gourdough has plenty dessert donuts options like the banana pudding one we had.

Salt Lick BBQ – Austin

You haven’t visited Texas if you did not try their BBQ. With that in mind, we set out on a quest to find the best BBQ in Austin with… a reasonable wait time. We went to Salt Lick and were almost immediately seated. This place is BYOB, but they have a wine cellar next door so don’t worry you’re covered even if you don’t bring your own cooler. We were able to get outdoor seating. Nothing beats good BBQ, weather and company!

Ramen Tatsu-Ya – Austin

I go to so many ramen bars that I am tempted to install a map widget on the site to track all the shops I went to. The point is, I have eaten many many bowls of ramen here in the States and I can confidently say that Ramen Tatsu-Ya is up in my top 5. I had their tsukemen (not pictured) and it was beyond amazing. If I had more space in my stomach I would have gone for a second bowl. In addition to their great ramen, the Negi and Chashu rice bowl (top right hand corner) deserves some honorable mentions. I love scallions but I would never eat them in large amounts because of their pungent smell. However, I had no complaints when I had the Negi rice bowl. I believe that the scallions were very well seasoned and went very well with the sushi rice.

Cow Tipping Creamery – Austin & Lick – Austin & San Antonio

The only sweets I had during this trip. I love them both but I enjoyed Lick’s vanilla ice cream a lot more. Other than serving terrific ice creams, they are also serving the community by locally sourcing their ingredients.

Liberty Bar – San Antonio

To be honest, we came here because 1. we thought that they were serving brunch during the weekdays (they don’t) and 2. their building is PINK. We had a beef stew and a homemade pasta which we enjoyed but really wished that they were serving their french toast. We will definitely come back for brunch but probably not for lunch or dinner.

Dough Pizzeria Napoletana – San Antonio

Finally! Our last stop in our Texas weekend trip. Just hours before all five of us boarded the plane to different locations, we devoured 2 small and 1 large pans of pizza. I grew up in a place where pizza is equivalent to bread slathered with pasta sauce, so I really enjoy thicker pizzas like the Chicago deep dish pizza. Coming here, I was skeptical that I would not like the pizza they offered. I was proven very wrong when they served us their “aragula & prosciutto di san daniele” pizza. Despite their thin dough, they were very moist and chewy.
