AFTERNOON TEA AT THE MANDARIN ORIENTAL NYC

Last (long, thank goodness) weekend, Melissa visited me and we finally had afternoon tea together for the first time. We have been friends for about five years and it still baffles me that we have never had afternoon tea together. We finally had tea together and Mandarin Oriental surpassed all of my expectations. Great view, great tea, great scones and fantastic company! Their savories were fantastic. My favorite was the smoked salmon roll. The sweets were also good but we gave most of our sweets to our other friend cause we were too full. I was pretty surprised that the scones were on the sweeter side, but I still find it extremely pleasant. We had such a great time there, I persuaded my friend to go the weekend after! If you are thinking of having afternoon tea here, here are some tips:

  • Call the hotel lobby but do not bother telling them your reservation preferences, your call will be forwarded to the lobby lounge.
  • This is the hotel’s lobby’s lounge, so if you are not interested in afternoon tea, they have breakfast, brunch, dinner and cocktail hour.
  • Request a window seat! They can’t guarantee it, but it never hurts to try. If you ended up not getting a window seat, you can always request to move to a window seat if it’s available.
  •  Ask for a tea refill!
  • We did not try this, but try asking for more scones. Afternoon tea services usually offers free flow of scones.
  • Try napping on the couch (see last pic), it was very comfortable.

If you love afternoon tea as much as I do, let me know in the comments below your favorite places to have high tea! I am always on the hunt for flakey scones and soothing cups of tea.
